        History

The Jim Koch Amateur Wrestling Collection contains 31 wrestling books and 61 bound volumes of Amateur Wrestling News, the oldest and most respected wrestling publication in the country. The collection’s Amateur Wrestling News issues date from January 1956 to the present. The monthly magazine features results at the high school, college and world levels. Tournaments and major conferences are covered in detail.

Bob Barling's index of Amateur Wrestling News has been converted into an online searchable index.

The index is divided into two parts: People and Subjects. The "People" section of the index includes the names of nearly every South Dakota State University wrestler and coach. There are also names of other prominent wrestlers who are not affiliated with South Dakota State. The "Subject" section includes entries about other universities' wrestling programs, conferences, the Olympics and World Games.

You can browse through the listing by clicking on the "+" next to the folder icon for "People" or "Subjects.

To search the index, please use the search bar under the image of Jim Koch.

        Topics of special interest include:

        • SDSU Wrestling Conference Champions
        • SDSU Wrestling National Champions
        • SDSU History of Wrestling Coaches

The collection belonged to Jim Koch, a South Dakota State University graduate and esteemed college wrestling coach. Koch’s family donated the collection to Briggs Library in 2017, thanks to the facilitation of library volunteer Bob Bartling. Bartling created an index of every issue of AWN. Bartling was also responsible for bringing in the Prairie Striders Running Club Library.
