The first part of the notebook discusses his experiments on 38 plots, which included numerous varieties of grasses, oats, wheat, alfalfa, clovers, and corn. The notebook also details his research on an additional 64 plots of grasses and forage plants. The notes include his assessments of the varieties and comments regarding the weather.
