Sioux Falls, S. D.Sioux Falls, South Dakota,
May the 30th, 1916Mr. H. L. Loucks,
Watertown, S. D.Dear Friend:-
I have read that book through and I must say it is crude, terribly so. It is on the Tom Lawson-Hearst style. I have been reading some of your manuscript, which is invariably excellent.
Now, in regard to a ticket. I will have nothing to do with it. I would not attend a conference with the author of that book or with the man who called on me in Chicago and of course they cannot use my name anywhere. If they undertake to set up a new party, it will simply be a farce.
I am going to keep on reading your manuscript as I am interested in it and want to finish it. However, do not wait for me, as I am very busy with a complication of affairs.
Sincerely yours,
R. F. Pettigrew
