  • Abbott Hall was named for Cleveland Abbott, a 1916 alumnus from Watertown, S.D. Abbott was SDSU’s first African American varsity athlete, earning 14 letters competing in track, football, basketball and baseball. A World War II veteran, he coached football and served as athletics director at Tuskegee University from 1923-1955. The football stadium at Tuskegee bears his name. Abbott served on the 1946 U.S. Olympic Committee and coached Alice Coachman, the first African American woman to win an Olympic gold medal, taking the high jump title at the 1948 Olympic Games.

  • Receiving its first major renovation in 51 years, the dairy microbiology building was dedicated as the Alfred Dairy Science Hall in October 2011. It is home to the Department of Dairy and Food Science and the Biology & Microbiology department. The building was dedicated in honor of the late Alfred Nef and Alfred Gonzenbach, two Swiss immigrants who founded Valley Queen Cheese Factory in Milbank, S.D.

  • The Animal Science Arena is used for bringing in livestock for classes and evaluation. It is also home to the annual Little International Livestock Exposition (Little I) and other judging contests. The Meat Lab allows students to create their own meat products and conduct research.   • Avera Health & Science Center opened in July 2010 and features 97,000 square feet of teaching, laboratory and office space as well as 48,600 square feet of research laboratory space.
  • Built and equipped at a cost of $50 million with a lead gift of $15 million from Avera Health. Dedicated Sept. 9, 2010, with Julie Gerberding, former CDC director, as speaker. Each floor of the building has laboratories in the center, with offices around the outskirts along with designated study rooms. The lowest level of the building has large lecture halls. The first floor has offices for the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Labs on the first floor are primarily for pharmacy. Second-floor labs are used for chemistry, with the third floor used for biochemistry and medical laboratory science. Shepard Hall, which now serves as the north wing of the center, was completed remodeled into modern research labs as the final phase of this project. Shephard Hall honors Professor James Shepard, the first Department of Chemistry head and director of the Experiment Station. He introduced laboratory chemistry to complement classroom teaching and was credited with developing the first pharmacy curriculum when it was added to chemistry offerings in 1889. He is predominately known for his research on sugar beets and developing a super strain.

  • The Bailey Rotunda houses seven large, theater-style classrooms and a technology center to provide the latest in modern teaching techniques. Built in 1969 at the cost of $547,727.
  • Each room has smart classroom technology, allowing faculty members to use different forms of audio and visual materials to teach their courses. In the Bailey Rotunda, students can find posters from all over campus filled with activities, club meetings, job postings and more. The building was named for Harold S. Bailey, Jr. He joined the war effort following his graduation from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1944. After the war, he earned his master’s degree at Massachusetts and completed his doctoral studies at Purdue University, where he also was an instructor. He began teaching at SDSU in 1951 and gained full-professor status in 1958. He continued as a professor until his retirement in 1985. Dr. Bailey served as Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry from 1951 to 1985 and as Dean and vice President of Academic Affairs from 1961 to 1985. He served as Dean of the Graduate School from 1965 to 1977. During the 1970s and 1980s, Dr. Bailey was director of both the South Dakota and North Dakota Department Leadership programs under the State Boards of Regents for the American Council on Education.

  • Located on Eleventh Street at the northwest corner of campus, there are four single bedrooms within each of the 80 apartments, which can be rented on nine- or twelve-month contracts.
  • Each apartment has a large kitchen complete with a dishwasher, a bathroom and vanity area, and air conditioning. Mini-blinds cover all windows in the apartment. The entrances of the buildings are secured at all times and equipped with an intercom system. There are elevators, and the common area and each bedroom have Internet accessibility through SDSU Information Technology Services. Four students can sign up to live together, or roommates can be assigned. While the apartment buildings are co-ed, the individual apartments are not.

  • Binnewies Hall is a co-ed residence hall on the east side of campus built in 1969. It is connected by Larson Commons to Young Hall. Binnewies houses 490 residents in its eight building wings.
  • Named after Edward Ralph Binnewies, former chemistry professor and director of student affairs as well as a member of the first Hobo Day Committee. Edward came to SDSU as a student in 1909 and graduated with a degree in chemistry and education in 1913. He obtained a Master of Science degree here in 1915, while at the same time serving as a laboratory instructor. He became an instructor in Chemistry in 1916 and was named an associate professor in 1923. In 1944, while continuing his teaching, he also became acting Director of Student Affairs and two years later was named Professor of Chemistry and Director of Student Affairs. In 1953, he was named Professor Emeritus and director emeritus and continued to serve the university until his death in 1964.

  • Caldwell Hall houses approx. 300 students and is used as a co-ed hall for second year students. Caldwell also has some specifically designed ADA rooms available for students with additional needs.
  • Caldwell Hall is named in honor of Ada Bertha Caldwell, Professor of Industrial Arts from 1899 to 1936. Artist and teacher, Caldwell taught the state's most well-known artist Harvey Dunn. Caldwell¹s influence extended outside of classroom instruction in the arts as reflected in her efforts in the creation of the Coolidge Sylvan Theatre and the construction of the first student union which is now Pugsley Center.
