This collection consists of correspondence, writings, maps, field notebooks, and research projects conducted by Dr. Carter Johnson during his academic career. A large number of photographs, slides, and digital images of Johnson's research, and include various plants and trees growing in various locations throughout the United States, primarily the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Badlands National park in western South Dakota, Itasca State Park in Minnesota, and North Dakota.

Large Cottonwood tree

Cottonwood tree is 19.5 feet tall. In 2008 it was discovered that this tree and most other extremely large and old cottonwoods in this stand had died and fallen to the ground. This tree may have been present when Lewis and Clark passed by in the early 1800's. W. Carter Johnson's wife, Janet, is next to tree.
