Pine Ridge Plat Map

  • MA 100
  • 1930s-1940s

The book contains 146 plats detailing property boundaries and ownership and leasing of lands on the Pine Ridge Reservation dating between 1936 and 2005. Changes to the plats are recorded on transparency sheets that are placed on top of the original pages. In order to provide as much detail as possible, the digitized copy of the original contains three scanned images for each plat: the transparency sheet and the original sheet, the transparency sheet alone, and the original sheet alone.

The beginning of the book includes a page describing the color code for the shading found within the pages of the book. The shading represents status of the land. Much of this page is faded and difficult to read.

The next page of the book is a typewritten copy of the "Order of Restoration, Pine Ridge Reservation," dated June 10, 1936 and attributed to Harold L. Ickes, United States Secretary of the Interior (1933-1946). The text of the document is as follows:

"Whereas, under authority contained in the Act of Congress approved May 27, 1910 (36 Stat. 440), providing for the classification and disposition of surplus unallotted lands in Bennett County, in the Pine Ridge Reservation, State of South Dakota, certain classes of said surplus lands were opened to settlement and entry under the general provisions of the homestead laws and of the said Act of Congress, by Presidential proclamation of June 29, 1911 (37 Stat. 1691), and Whereas, there are now remaining undisposed of on the opened portion of the Pine Ridge Reservation a number of tracts of said surplus lands which, while of little value for the original purpose of settlement and entry, upon thorough investigation have been found to be valuable to the Indians of the said reservation, and Whereas, by relinquishment and cancellation of homestead entries a small additional area of similar lands may be included within the class of undisposed of surplus lands, and Whereas, the Tribal Council, the Superintendent of the Pine Ridge Reservation, and the Commissioner of Indian Affairs have recommended restoration to tribal ownership of all such undisposed-of lands in the said reservation. Now, therefore, by virtue of the authority vested in the Secretary of the Interior by Sections 3 and 7 of the Act of June 18, 1934 (48 Stat. 984), I hereby find that restoration to tribal ownership of all lands which are now, or may hereafter be, classified as undisposed-of surplus opened lands of the Pine Ridge Reservation, will be in the public interest, and the said lands are hereby restored to tribal ownership for the use and benefit of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of the Pine Ridge Reservation of South Dakota, and are added to and made a part of the existing reservation, subject to any valid existing rights." The Pine Ridge Reservation plats comprise the subsequent pages. The reservation is home to the Oglala Lakota people. It is located in the southwest part of South Dakota in Oglala and Bennett Counties and portions of Jackson County. The boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation were established by the United States government through the act of March 2, 1889 (25 Stat. L. 888).

Approval was not given at first, because the request for new funds exceeded a specific amount. However, it was approved later the year. The AEWR program had been in a partnership with the AEWR program in the School of Mines and Technology. They created a joint program in Atmospheric, Environmental and Water Resources. This joint program provided PhD education and degrees in the fields of atmospheric, environmental and water resources. The reports and papers cover such topics such as bridge approaches and developments, water management, networks, and systems. Cuneiform Tablet Collection

  • AR 003
  • Collection
  • 50 BCE 2003 CE, 1987, 2002-2003

This collection consists of six Sumerian Cuneiform Tablets, a translation by Edgar J. Banks, research and manuscript material. Five of the tablets are approximately 1.5" x 1.5" in size. The tablets come from Ancient Mesopotamia, a historical region of Western Asia situated within the Tigris-Euphrates river system, in the northern part of the Fertile Crescent, corresponding to most of modern day Iraq, Kuwait, the eastern parts of Syria, and Southwestern Turkey. The translation found with the tablets provides only general information about each tablet: date, place found, and general description. The translations state that three of the tablets are records of receipt for temple offerings, one a sealed temple record and one contract or business document.

South Dakota State College President Willis E. Johnson, who was president of South Dakota State College from 1919 to 1923, purchased the tablets from Edgar James Banks in 1923 for $26.00.

The sixth tablet is 4 inches wide x 6.5 inches long. This tablet was transferred to the archives from the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum. A label affixed to the tablet reads: Egyptian Prescription given me by Daphne Serles and had belonged to Dr. Earl Serles. This script was misidentified as Egyptian hieroglyphics but is indeed Sumerian Cuneiform. This tablet has no transcription.

South Dakota Eminent Leaders in Agriculture, Family, and Community Records

  • UA 050.13
  • Collection
  • 1927-2012

This collection is composed of scrapbooks, photographs, citations, and publications related to Eminent Farmers and Homemakers.

The Scrapbooks are composed of three scrapbooks of the Eminent Farmers and Homemakers. Scrapbook I covers the years 1928-1969 and includes a report of an annual business meeting, newsletters, newspaper clippings of eminent farmers and homemakers (mainly obituaries), correspondence, programs and memorabilia. Scrapbook II is titled "Sands of Time" and covers the years 1952-1982. This scrapbook includes newspaper clippings, photographs, minutes from annual meetings for the years 1965-1982, and a necrology report for 1972-82 that lists deaths of eminent farmer and homemakers and notes the year that they were honored. Scrapbook III is titled "History, 1972-1988". This scrapbook includes biographies of eminent farmer and homemakers, programs from annual meetings and notes any deaths that occurred during the year. Also included is a mailing list of Master Farmer Homemakers for 1972-1988.

The Honoree photographs are composed of photographs of Eminent Farmer and Homemakers for the years 1927-1991. These photographs formerly hung on the Eminent Farmer and Homemaker Wall of Fame in Agricultural Hall on the South Dakota State University Campus. Most of the photographs are approximately 14.5 inches x 18 inches in size. Due to the manner in which these photographs were displayed, many were damaged by UV rays. On the mat of each photograph was a caption that included the name, year honored, and county or town of the Eminent Farmer of Homemaker. The Eminent Farmer photographs also included their occupation or area of interest in the caption. The Eminent Homemaker photograph captions only stated that each was an Eminent Homemaker and most do not include the woman's first name, only the name of their spouse preceded by Mrs. (i.e. Mrs. John Doe). This seemed to remain the practice until the late 1980's.

Mats and frames that housed the Honoree Photographs were removed for preservation purposes. Care was taken in the removal of the mats, however some tape and dried glue residue still remains. Photographs and negatives were removed to the Photograph Archives for preservation and access purposes. The negatives that accompany these photographs are mainly 4 inches x 5 inches in size and cover the years 1960-1991. The negatives were produced after the photographs were removed from Agricultural Hall and before the mats were removed. The caption that was included on the mat of each photograph appears in these negatives. This material is arranged chronologically.

The Honoree citations are composed of citations of Eminent Farmers and Homemakers. Each citation includes biographical information about the farmer or homemaker, information about how each manages their farm or household, and notes other awards or offices held. Some citations include a transcript of the acceptance speech given by the farmer or homemaker at the recognition banquet. The earlier citations generally include stories of how their families came to homestead in Dakota Territory and include accounts of dealing with blizzards and Indians. This material is arranged alphabetically.

Also included are programs published for the Eminent Farmers and Homemakers banquet held annually to recognize that year's recipients of the award.
