The Home Management records are composed of photographs and historical material about the Home Management program at South Dakota State College. Folders include books compiled for Alice Rosenberger, Dean of the College of Home Economics by Grace Wasson Bonnell, alumni. These books contain photographs and anecdotal information about of children who participated in the Home Management baby program. Also included is a history of the program and plans for a new laboratory, the Family Resource and Management Center.

Composed of publications produced by the Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape and Parks Department. Material included newsletters, programs, certificates, record books, clippings, info-sheets, surveys, pamphlets, and a survey.

Also included is a botany ledger used to teach the manes of plants and study plant anatomy. Included are descriptions of the plant and a plant sample pressed between the pages. This ledger was most likely compiled by a student, although there is no distinct evidence to that.

Researchers are urged to view this material with care as the pages are loose and the plant samples are very fragile and contain allergens.

Composed mainly of books given to instructors as complimentary copies. These books deal with topics related to family and consumer sciences teacher education. Also included in audio-visual material used in class instruction and VHS video cassettes. One of the video cassettes is of a slide presentation created by Arthur Amiotte. Also included are plaques, brochures and programs related to the Human Development, Consumer and Family Sciences Department.

This series is composed of personnel handbooks, orientation and benefits material, Career Service Advisory Council minutes and programs from mass meetings, and material related to the change to web time entry.

"The Incredible Gladys Pyle" Collection consists of clippings, correspondence, financial records, manuscripts, research, transcripts and audio cassettes.

The clippings include advertisements for the published book and clippings of Gladys Pyle on her 96th birthday. The correspondence includes letters on the publication of the book and letters from Gladys Pyle noting corrections for the book. Included is a handwritten letter from Governor Sigurd Anderson praising Gladys Pyle and her contributions to South Dakota politics.

The financial records are minimal and include itemized lists of expenses. There are two manuscripts for the book, one is with the published title "The Incredible Gladys Pyle", and the other with an alternative title "Gladys Pyle: Always a Pioneer". The transcripts appear to accompany only one set of audiocassettes. Included with the transcripts are notebooks with interview questions for Miss Pyle.

The collection contains the constitution and bylaws of the Unified Encampment of South Dakota and the proceedings of the Grand Encampment of South Dakota.

This collection is composed of administration files compiled by the Office of International Affairs, and records dealing with agreements, exchange activities, faculty development seminars abroad, and visits by officials of participating international universities. The bulk of this collection is records dealing directly with Manchester Metropolitan University in Manchester, England. Chungnam National University in Daejeon, Republic of Korea, Yunnan Normal University in Kunming, People's Republic of China and other study and exchanges abroad with various countries.

The Administrative material is composed of administrative files compiled by the International Programs Office. Included are reports, clippings, and correspondence. The bulk of this series consists of material dealing with the internationalization of the university through teaching learning styles of various countries and regions throughout the world, newsletters published under various titles and formats over the years and posters used to advertise various programs available through the department.

The study, exchanges, and travel abroad material is composed of records dealing with agreements, exchange activities, faculty development seminars abroad, and visits by officials of participating international universities. The bulk of this collection is records dealing directly with Manchester Metropolitan University in Manchester, England. Chungnam National University in Daejeon, Republic of Korea, Yunnan Normal University in Kunming, People's Republic of China and other study and exchanges abroad with various countries.

The Manchester Metropolitan University material is composed of files dealing with agreements, exchange activities, faculty development seminars abroad, nursing health care and pharmacy exchange, and official visits. The oversize material is housed in oversize containers. The photographs were removed from the files and added to the UA 30.1 photograph archives as noted in the files.

The Chungnam National University material is composed of correspondence, lists of exchange professors and graduates, written experience of faculty, and photographs. Additional documentation of exchange activities can be seen in lists of visitors and students who exchanged, the itineraries for official visits, and social events held in honor of guests and professors which are found in separate files.

The Yunnan Normal University files is composed of correspondence, photographs, a list of the individuals who were exchange professors, and reports written by exchange professors documenting their experiences.

Material related to other exchanges and study abroad consists of material compiled for study abroad and exchanges with Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Bolivia, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, India, the International Arid Lands Consortium, Japan, Korea, the Middle East, Mexico, the Netherlands, the Pacific Rim, Poland Russia, Sweden and Denmark, and Switzerland. This material is arranged by country. The following scope notes were written with the assistance of Harriet Swedland, former director of International Program at South Dakota State University.

This collection is composed of an unedited manuscript for Kramer's book, A History of South Dakota State University 1884-1975. This manuscript was reduced for publication so there may be some material available that is not found in the book. Also included are biographies complied by Kramer of South Dakota State University presidents dating from 1884 to 1975.

This collection is composed of material related to athletics at South Dakota State University. Included are files regarding administration, the Athletics Committee, publications, the Women's Recreation Association, and files related to specific sports (e.g. baseball, men's and women's basketball, cross country, football, rodeo, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling).

The administrative material consists of material dealing with academic advising, development, compliance, equipment, facilities and operations, the Jackrabbit Sports Network, marketing and promotion, and the ticket office. Folders are composed of annual reports, programs, handbooks, brochures, photographs, mascot designs, newsletters, schedules. The series also contains banners, caps, t-shirts, and jerseys. The Athletics Committee consist of meeting minutes and budget files. Files regarding of the individual sports consist of media guides, clippings, record books, programs, brochures, fact books, and photographs. A large amount of cross country and track and field files are included and consist of results from meets and workouts and research. The publications series includes the Rabbit Report from 1978-2014 and The Bum from 1956 to 2017. These files are not complete as they are missing some issues.

Collection consists of files relating to the SDSU Theatre program, productions by State University Theatre and Prairie Reparatory Theatre, slides and photographs, programs, course material, news clippings, and posters.

This collection is composed of reports on experiments conducted at the Big Stone Power Plant, collected material, files related to his consulting work with Dorand Engineering Services, personal material consisting of correspondence, class lectures, research, community involvement, and publications.

This collection is mainly composed of material collected by Janet Stofferan while employed by the Simplicity Pattern Company. The material give researchers a look at the day-to-day workings of field staff traveling for the company. Included is correspondence, promotional materials, newspaper clippings, information regarding insurance, travel policies, routing and payments, schedules and promotions for stylists in the fashion promotion department.

Researchers will also find a small amount of material related to Adaline Snellman Hsia, a history of home economics at South Dakota State University, course syllabi from the 1960s, and material for judges at the Little International Agricultural Exposition at South Dakota State University.

Jay Dirksen was the Track and Field and Cross Country coach at South Dakota State University from 1969 to 1977. The collection consists mainly of Dirksen's files on S.D.S.U. athletes coached by him. The file include record sheets of training programs, correspondence, clippings, photographs, and other data related to the running career of each athlete. Also included are files related to Dirksen's research on cross country running.

This collection is composed of materials that pertain to the college. Folders contain booklets, programs, brochures, correspondence, minutes, periodicals, reports, posters, and photographs.

A large portion of the material deals with Engineering and Science Research at South Dakota State University. This material consists of summary sheets, reports and correspondence and is arranged by researcher name. This material covers research for engineering, chemistry, pharmacy, and agronomy.

Also included is biographical information on prominent persons related to the College of Engineering, including, Harold M. Crothers, Harry Solberg, Halvor Solberg, and Guy Lee Boyden.

A file on the engineering controversy of the early 1970s dealing with the possible transfer of the College of Engineering from South Dakota State University to another institution in the state. This material consists mainly of clippings, but also included is correspondence and notes.

Other items of note include several files of brochures on the various programs offered by the college, the Impulse magazine, a periodical published by the college featuring events and happenings in the college, and file dealing with the history of the College of Engineering at South Dakota State University.

Material relating to Jim Marking's career in coaching basketball as collected by him. Includes some instructional materials and basketball handouts, notes, notebooks of plays, record forms, and game programs, etc. Also includes press clippings regarding his retirement in 1974 and numerous congratulatory letters and cards for both his retirement and for his induction into the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame in 1982.

Work history of Joseph and Signe Stuart including lecture notes, correspondence, retirement material, material related to Signe's Badlands intermedia performance at South Dakota State University, art exhibition material, photographs, videos, sketches, and biographical information.

Composed of mainly of publications produced by the department. Folders consist of mainly of newsletters but also contain pamphlets, programs, posters and info-sheets. Also included is the South Dakota Observer, a newspaper written, edited, set in type and laid out by journalism students at South Dakota State University and printed in the university's printing lab.

The collection is primarily composed of photographs collected by Billow, as well as awards, writings, correspondence, and her family’s genealogical documents and photographs. Papers and photographs relating to her role planning and organizing the 2000 and 2001 South Dakota Tours for new faculty at SDSU are also included. The scrapbook contains family genealogical documents such as birth, confirmation, and marriage documents, as well as Dr. Billow’s original art including watercolors, ink drawings, and sketches.

This collection is composed of material collected by J.P. Hendrickson in his work with the South Dakota Constitutional Revision Commission and the writing of the Home Rule Charter for Brookings, South Dakota in 1996. Folders contain reports, commission documents, minutes, correspondence, material relating to constitutional amendments, and notes.

This collection is composed of a small assortment of records from the Theta Mu Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi at South Dakota State University. Included is a handbook, a VHS video cassette, and files related to membership and banquets.

This collection is composed of meeting records, policies, constitution, by-laws, club history, and photographs.

Composed of newsletters and a course announcement. The newsletters consist of two newsletters: 1) the Latin American Area Studies Program from the fall of 1985, and 2) the South Dakota chapter of the American Association for Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Also included is a poster announcing a course on Latin American politics in the Latin American Area Studies Program.

This collection was compiled by Lawrence Hunt’s daughter, Gayle (Hunt) Matz. Gayle’s daughter, Erin, recorded her “’Grandy” (granddaddy), Lawrence, for a school assignment. Hunt talks about life during the Depression and his service in World War II.

Material consists of a short biography of Lawrence Hunt, written by his daughter, Gayle Matz; an audiocassette; and seven digital images of Lawrence Hunt.

This collection is composed of a material published for the Little International Agricultural Exposition for advertising purposes. Folders contain news releases, posters, and programs.

Composed of Lonita Gustad Corothers' diaries from 1946 through 2010, excerpts from and a timeline index of the diaries, correspondence with Tom Corothers written primarily during their courtship, a grief notebook written after her husband died, and her original writings and poetry. Of note are the daily descriptions of her experiences as a student at South Dakota State College from 1946 to 1950.

This collection consists primary of the scrapbook "The Girl Graduate, Her Own Book" as completed by Loto Rollinstahl Underwood documenting her life in college. Topics include programs, social events and miscellaneous. Items in the scrapbook include invitations, class listings, programs, dance cards, commencement publications, and newspaper clippings. The scrapbook includes no photographs and very few drawings. Within the scrapbooks 176 numbered pages, there are very few written entries but many pasted and loosely interleaved items.

This collection is composed of scrapbooks documenting his years of corn breeding research. They consist mainly of newspaper clippings, certificates, photographs, news releases and correspondence. Also included is a BS diploma from South Dakota State College, MS and Ph. D diploma from Iowa State College, an honorary degree from South Dakota State University and a citation from the Army Service Forces for the Army Commendation Ribbon.

This collection is composed to material related to Dr. Mary Arnold’s career. Files included material from classes she taught, writings, correspondence, and records from her work with high school journalism.

This collection is composed mainly of materials related to the Promotional Techniques for Engineers class which Benton Lee developed with Dean of Engineering Ernest Buckley in 1987. Material consists of general files for the class including lecture notes, class notebooks, and audio-visual material. Also included are personal files from 1992-2010 and cover Benton Lee's years as a graduate assistant for the South Dakota Space Grant Consortium and diversity coordinator for the College of Engineering.

Promotional Techniques for Engineers Class

In 1987, Dean of Engineering, Ernest Buckley and Mary Jo Benton Lee developed the Promotional Techniques for Engineers course. The concept was to teach journalism skills to engineering students and then ask them to promote major university-wide and state-wide events with their newly acquired skills. The ten students each year, who were hand-picked for this experience, all became student leaders.

Between 1987 and 1992, the students were routinely given budgets of $20,000 to use for the promotion of major events that drew speakers and participants from around the country. These events, all sponsored by the College of Engineering, included an Impact '87 Trade Fair, a Making Connections ethics seminar, and an Expanding Horizons Together entrepreneurship workshop.
The Promotional Techniques for Engineers Class series is composed of general files, class lecture notes, class notebooks on promotional campaigns, and audio-visual material. An item of note is the proceedings from the American Society of Engineering Education conference which includes a paper that explains the promotional techniques class in detail (page 1-8).

Class Projects

The Class Projects series is composed of promotional campaign material for various projects that the class worked on. Included are files on the Entrepreneurs' Workshop (Expanding Horizons Together - A Seminar on Entrepreneurship Opportunities), the Impact '87 Trade Fair, and the Seminar on Ethics (Making Connections - A Seminar on Ethics in a Technological Society). Included are promotional campaign reports which details the promotional techniques the class used for each project.

Personal Files

The Personal Files series is composed of other College of Engineering material that Benton Lee collected during her tenure. Included are files of the South Dakota Space Grant Consortium while she was a graduate assistant (1992-1998) during the time when South Dakota's tribal colleges were incorporated into the Consortium. Also included are files while she served as the Diversity Coordinator for the College of Engineering (1998-2010). Benton Lee took this position after she completed her Ph.D. in Sociology in 1998.

Flandreau Indian School Success Academy

South Dakota State University-Flandreau Indian School Success Academy is an early and intensive college preparatory program for American Indian high school students. This material includes reports and a history of the Flandreau Indian School.

The Mary O’Neill Papers are composed of course material, college course notes, files related to her work with AmericaView, South DakotaView, Upper Midwest Aerospace Consortium, and South Dakota State University. Also included is material related to the many research projects related to geospatial technologies, remote sensing, geographic information systems, and global positioning systems.

This collection is composed of material pertaining to the Mathematics and Statistics Department. Included are posters, brochures, e-mail correspondence, and a policy statement.

In the course of his research over the last ten years, Associate Professor Matthew Cecil has used the Freedom of Information and Privacy Act to collect the J. Edgar Hoover-era FBI files of hundreds of prominent journalists. In all, Cecil has collected nearly 90,000 pages of FBI information. The files have provided the raw material for several scholarly publications and Cecil has several more, along with a book project, in the works.

The folders consist of photocopied files provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation at the request of Dr. Cecil. The documents were reviewed under the Freedom on Information/Privacy Acts, Title 5, United Stated Code, Section 552/552a by the FBI. Deletions were made to protect information which was exempt from disclosure. A deleted page information sheet was inserted in the file to indicate where pages were withheld. These sheets will be found in the folders.

Most of the material in the folders is made up of correspondence and clippings from newspapers and tearsheets from magazines and other publications. Researchers will also find case reports, FBI teletype (a message sent and received via a teleprinter-character printer connected to a telegraph that operates like a typewriter), routing slips, memoranda, telegrams, surveillance reports, news releases, interviews, essays, investigations, and typescripts.

While the strength of this collection lies in journalism and the J. Edgar Hoover era of the FBI, the topics of the collection covers a wide variety of subjects, from Communism and McCarthyism to organized crime, kidnapping, death threats, and the Kennedy Assassination and smear campaigns.

Some photocopies provided by the FBI are difficult to read. When this occurred, a sheet was inserted in the file that states:

"The best copy obtainable is included in the reproduction of these documents. Pages included that are blurred, lights, or otherwise difficult to read are the result of the condition of the original document. No better copy can be reproduced."

Some of the material received were water damaged. While no mold is present, the papers are warped and wrinkled. They are dry but may become brittle over time. These folders have been marked as "water damaged." The Archives reserves the right to refuse photocopy requests if these materials become too fragile or may be damaged by the photocopying process.

This collection is composed of textbooks on music, psychology, social studies, European and American history, economics, sociology, English literature, education, and books of poetry and prose.

This collection is composed of a program from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers conference held at South Dakota State University in 1950 and invitations to banquets for retiring faculty members.

This collection is composed of records of the Military Science Department, ROTC records and scrapbooks for the Pershing’s Rifles and the Pershingettes. Material consists primarily of records from the Military Science Department at South Dakota State University and includes programs, clippings, a course catalog, a scrapbook, books and artifacts. Some items of note include a file of clippings dealing with the death of Omar Bradley and registers of graduates and former cadets of the United States Military Academy from 1802-1978. Other interesting items consist of dance cards for military balls held in 1912 and 1913. The artifacts consist of two hats used by cadets around 1888 and 1927.

Material produced by the Reserve Officers' Training Corps Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC programs. Folders contain programs, newsletters, pamphlets, posters, announcements, invitations, photographs and an artifact. Topics covered include Governor's Day, awards, military balls, recruitment, and commissioning exercises. The artifact in this series is a 48-star United States flag that was used by the ROTC color guard prior to 1958. The photographs consist mainly of Army ROTC photographs of field training at various locations (Palisades State Park near Garretson, South Dakota; Oak Lake near White, South Dakota), Camp Adventure Training, awards banquets, Dining-In, Commissioning ceremonies, ROTC Days, Governor's Day, and Hobo Day parade float entries.

This collection is composed of correspondence, ledgers from the beginnings of the society that include the constitution of the society and minutes from meetings and programs from plays presented by the society. Found inside the back of the ledger from 1903-1931 were loose papers that include clippings, notes, membership information, reports and an orations from a 1916 contest on Booker Washington.

Composed of composed mainly of the newsletter "Campanile" produced by the Modern Languages Department from 1974 to 1995. Also included are announcements for special language courses, such as Chinese, Japanese and Russian, a departmental history obtained from written histories of the college, and college catalogues; department information pamphlets; programs from awards banquets; and, standing rules of the department which detail policies and procedures for the Modern Languages Department in 1957.

The H.M. Briggs Library holds four illuminated manuscript leaves, or single pages. The pages consist of religious texts. One leaf is the Biblia Sacra Latina, which is a page from the Latin Bible and dates to the 13th century. The leaves were purchased from the estate of Morris Elmer Nellermoe, Jr. (1926-2004).

The Hours of the Virgin, a section of the Book of Hours, which are devotional prayers for different times of the day. Hours of the Virgin, also known as the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary, contained psalms, lessons, hymns, and prayers said at each of the eight canonical hours: Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers, and Compline. The Book of Hours was the bestselling book of the Middle Ages. These pages date from the middle of the 15th century.

The Biblia Sacra Latina chapter numerals in red and blue with much pen work ornamentation. The work contained a number of historiated and illuminated initials, remarkable for the extremely wide margins.

This collection is composed of flyers and broadside for events sponsored by the department.

Photocopy of a handwritten account of Emil Jacobsen' life. The bound memoir contains 254 pages of Jacobsen's account along with ten pages of family tree materials and explanations.

This collection is composed of certificates and awards, convention programs, meeting minutes, and assorted materials documenting the National Association of Retired Federal Employees – Big Sioux chapter. Notable items include the chapter’s foundation certificate and banner.

This collection is composed of club records, yearbooks, scrapbooks, a manual, reports and sheet music.

The club records are in a variety of forms, from ledgers to notebooks. They include membership lists, officer lists, minutes from meetings and treasury reports. Included in some is correspondence, programs from events, and newspaper clippings.

The club yearbooks are composed of officer information, schedule meeting dates, hostess and theme information, and membership lists. The earlier yearbooks are handmade, usually of colored construction paper and are colored either with crayons or markers.
The scrapbooks include programs, certificates, newspaper clippings, and historical information.

Also included are financial records, correspondence, constitution and by-laws, and various pamphlets from the National Federation of Music Clubs.
