Brandt, Bruce Edwin

Dr. Brandt is an Emeritus Professor of English specializing in the English Renaissance, particularly Shakespearean studies and Renaissance drama, prose, and poetry. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1977, following his earlier academic pursuits with an M.A. and B.A. from the University of Denver in 1971 and 1969, respectively. Upon completing his doctoral studies, Brandt joined the faculty at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota, in the fall of 1979. Throughout his tenure at SDSU, his expertise lies primarily in English Renaissance literature, with a particular focus on Shakespearean studies and Renaissance drama, prose, and poetry.

In addition to his teaching and research responsibilities, Brandt has been actively involved in academic leadership and service roles at SDSU. He has served on various committees, contributed to departmental initiatives, and provided guidance and mentorship to students and colleagues alike.

Brandt's academic achievements have been recognized through various accolades and honors. He received the F.O. Butler Foundation Award for Excellence in Scholarship in 1992. Briggs, Hilton M. (Hilton Marshall), 1913-2001

In 1958, Hilton M. Briggs was appointed president at South Dakota State. He served in that capacity for 17 years, the longest tenure in the presidential office. He received his B.S. from Iowa State University, M.S. from North Dakota State University, and Ph. D. from Cornell University. He held positions as professor and associate dean of agriculture at Oklahoma State University and dean of agriculture at the University of Wyoming. During his tenure, the South Dakota State College of Agricultural and Mechanical Arts became South Dakota State University, divisions became colleges, and the campus grew to match its increasing status. The number of departments grew, enrollment increased by more than half, and the number of buildings on campus almost doubled. Briggs was also instrumental in beginning the social fraternities and sororities on campus and initiating women's intercollegiate athletics. He also guided the campus through the controversy and activism of the 1960s and 1970s. The Faculty Association became the Academic Senate with decision-making capacity under Briggs’ leadership, and the Student Association also took on more responsibility. Upon his retirement in 1975, he was designated a Distinguished Professor of Agriculture, taught for two years, and was appointed director of International Programs. He was involved in the development of the Botswana Africa Project, a United States Agency for International Development program for teaching, research, and agricultural extension in that country.

Dona Brown was born on May 25, 1909 in Brooking, South Dakota. She graduated from Huron High School in 1927. She went on to attend South Dakota State College where she earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1931 and a Master's in Education in 1937. She served 43 years as a teacher and counselor in Woonsocket and Huron, South Dakota.

Brown served on the South Dakota Board of Regents from 1957 to 1969. She has served as chairman of the board of trustees at Huron College, and has been a member of the SDSU Benefactors Club and the South Dakota Centennial Commission, She has also served on the board of directors of the South Dakota Personnel and Guidance Association, Salvation Army, Red Cross, and First Federal Savings and Loan in Huron, South Dakota. Her associations also include the American Association of University Women, Huron Chamber of Commerce, and the South Dakota Education Association.

Brown was inducted into the South Dakota Cowboy and Heritage Hall of Fame in 1980. South Dakota State University awarded her with an honorary doctorate and a Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1970.

Dona Brown died May 25, 1996.

Brown, George Lincoln

George L. Brown was born on January 25, 1869, on a farm in Bate County, Missouri. He went to a rural school then a preparatory school at the University of Missouri. He graduated with a B.S. degree in 1892. He taught at the University of Missouri just two years after he graduated, in the subject of mathematics. As he was teaching, he received his M.S. degree in Mathematics. George then went on to complete a fellowship at the University of Chicago where he would receive his Ph.D. in Mathematics. He was called to become a professor of mathematics and astronomy in February of 1897 to then South Dakota State College. He served as acting president 5 times during his 50 years of teaching at SDSU and was awarded president emeritus in 1944. He also served as the dean and the vice president at SDSU.

He married Winifred G Loucks of Deuel County in 1898. They had one son Cecil and two daughters Elizabeth and Florence. Winifred passed away in 1908. He then married Anna York Loucks of Brookings in 1910. They had two sons, George Jr and Gerald and two daughters Winifred and Charlotte.

George L. Brown passed away on August 8, 1950.
